When Sand Is the Right Call

If you are chasing a flat, stripe-worthy surface — filling scalped high spots, settling low spots, smoothing after aeration — use washed masonry sand. It moves with a leveling rake, does not hold a shape, and settles into hollows exactly where you need it. This is the standard for Bermuda lawns being maintained at low heights of cut.

When Compost Is the Right Call

Compost is a soil amendment, not a leveling material. On sandy, nutrient-poor or biologically dead soil, a quarter-inch of finished compost brushed in after core aeration is one of the highest-return things you can do for a lawn. On heavy clay it also helps, but slowly, and only if the plugs from aeration are broken up and worked in alongside it.

Water does not move readily between soil layers of very different texture. Two inches of sand sitting on clay does not drain into the clay — it holds water at the interface until the sand is saturated. That perched water table is why golf greens are built with a single engineered profile rather than annual layers of whatever was on sale.
