Best Grass Seed for Shade

Shade failures are almost always a seed choice problem, not a care problem. People buy a sun and shade contractor mix, spread it under a maple, and watch it thin out by July. The mix was mostly ryegrass and bluegrass, and neither one tolerates deep shade regardless of how you water it.

Measure the light before you buy seed

Check the area three times on a clear day — mid morning, noon, mid afternoon — and add up the hours of direct or bright filtered sun. Four or more hours gives you real options. Three hours is marginal. Under three hours, plan on mulch or a shade groundcover and save the money.

How to spread it so it takes

1. 1Rake out dead grass and any moss so seed touches soil.
2. 2Core aerate if the area is compacted from foot traffic under the tree.
3. 3Set a broadcast spreader to the overseeding rate on the bag — roughly 4 to 5 lb of fine fescue per 1,000 sq ft.
4. 4Make two half-rate passes at right angles instead of one full-rate pass.
5. 5Topdress with a quarter inch of compost or fine soil, then water lightly twice a day for 3 weeks.
6. 6Skip nitrogen-heavy fertilizer; use a starter fertilizer at label rate only.

Care differences in shade

• Mow one full inch higher than the sunny part of the lawn — more leaf, more photosynthesis.
• Water deeply and less often. Damp shade breeds moss and disease.
• Cut nitrogen by about half; shaded turf cannot use it and grows weak, leggy blades.
• Keep foot traffic off it. Shade turf recovers far more slowly than sun turf.
• Rake leaves promptly in fall — a week under wet leaves kills thin shade grass.
