The soil is nearly always too dry. A core aerator needs soil at roughly the moisture of a wrung-out sponge — water deeply one to two days before you aerate. If moisture is right and you still get no plugs, the next suspects are insufficient weight on the tines, packed tines, worn or short tines, thatch bridging the surface, and simply walking too fast.

A core aerator either pulls a soil plug and drops it on the lawn, or it does not. When it does not, people usually assume the machine is broken. It rarely is. Six things stop a plug from coming out of the ground, and five of them are free to fix.

1. The Soil Is Too Dry

This is the cause in most cases. Dry soil has no cohesion — the tine punches a hole, the soil crumbles instead of holding together as a core, and nothing is lifted out. Dry clay is worse still, because it behaves like fired ceramic and simply resists the tine.

2. Not Enough Weight on the Tines

Tow-behind and drum aerators penetrate by mass alone. Manufacturers' capacity figures assume the tray is loaded. An empty tray on clay will skip across the surface leaving dimples.

Concrete blocks or sandbags work. Distribute the load over the tray rather than stacking it at one end, or the leading tines dig and the trailing ones float.

3. The Tines Are Packed

A hollow tine only ejects a core when the previous core is pushed out by the next one. Once a tine is packed solid with clay, every subsequent stroke just compresses the plug tighter and the tool becomes a solid-tine spike aerator — which compacts the ground rather than relieving it.

  • Check the tines every few passes, not at the end of the job.
  • Clear a packed tine with a dowel or a long bottle brush, from the top down.
  • A light coat of dry silicone spray on the tine bore dramatically reduces packing.
  • Never hammer the tool on a driveway to clear it — that is how tines bend.

4. Worn, Short or Wrong Tines

Tines wear from the tip back. A tine that started at three inches and is now two and a quarter will still make holes, but the shorter throat holds less soil and releases plugs poorly. Check also that you actually have hollow tines: plenty of cheap 'aerators' ship with solid spikes or with a spiked roller, and no amount of technique will make those pull a core.

The Fact

They do the opposite job. A spike displaces soil sideways, which increases compaction in the wall around each hole. Core aeration removes soil entirely, which is the whole point. On clay, spikes make the problem measurably worse.

5. Thatch Is Bridging the Surface

More than about three-quarters of an inch of thatch acts like a springy mat. The tine compresses it, punches through, and the thatch layer springs back and grips the core as the tine withdraws — so the plug stays in the hole. If your tines come up clean and the holes look sealed, dethatch or scalp before aerating.

6. You Are Moving Too Fast

Tine geometry needs a moment at full depth to load the core. Towing at mowing speed gives each tine a glancing strike. Walk or drive at a slow, steady pace and make two perpendicular passes rather than one fast one.

Diagnose It in Two Minutes

  1. 1Push a screwdriver into the lawn. If it will not go in six inches with hand pressure, the soil is too dry — water and wait a day.
  2. 2Pull one tine and look down the bore. Packed? Clear all of them.
  3. 3Measure a tine. Under two and a half inches of usable length means replacement.
  4. 4Cut a small wedge of turf and measure the thatch. Over three-quarters of an inch, dethatch first.
  5. 5Add weight, slow down, and run one test pass of twenty feet before committing to the whole lawn.
